Select stores will offer comics to celebrate the beloved medium that brought us timeless superheroes like Spider-Man and Batman. The 20-year-old event “celebrates independent comic book stores, thousands of which exist in North America alone,” says the Free Comic Book Day website.
“Each is unique in their community, with their own unique style and personality, and each offers a full line of comics, graphic novels, toys, and related merchandise.”
Not all stores are participating and not all comics are available for free during the event. Some stores that choose to participate are listed on the Free Comic Book Day website. A total of 45 comics will be available for free, including “Avatar: The Last Airbender” by Dark Horse Comics, “Avengers/X-Men #1” by Marvel Comics, “The Best Archie Comic Ever #0″ by Archie Comic Publications ,” and “It Won’t Always Be This Way” from Malaka Gharib’s Ten Speed Press.
The event is a collaboration between Diamond Comic retailers, publishers, suppliers and distributors, who distribute the free comics to participating stores.
Fans hoping to grab their own free comic book should call their local comic book store ahead of time to find out if the store is participating and what books will be available, organizers say.
The comics “are fun to read, with a wide range of diverse stories that capture readers’ imaginations,” the organizers add. “It is worth celebrating in our book – we are proud to be part of this wonderful medium.”
