Experience the magical and supernatural side of Christmas with beloved Christmas stories, including “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, on an evening tour of parts of historic Hayes House.
Hayes Home Holidays: Spirits of Christmas tours are offered on December 18; December 19, December 22; and December 23.
Dickens, one of the most popular writers of the Victorian era, was President Rutherford B. Hayes’ favorite author and lived around the same time as Hayes. Hear Dickens’ stories in the Victorian Hayes Mansion, which will be lightly decorated for Christmas.
The Victorians believed that Christmas was a time when the portal to another world was open, which made the holiday popular for telling ghost stories. Many of Dickens’ works, including Christmas stories, feature the supernatural.
Enjoy the warmth of the Hayes House at night, a time when it is not often open to visitors, while listening to stories that will tingle your back but leave you feeling warm. A cup of wassail, a traditional holiday drink from the Victorian era, will also get you into the Christmas spirit.
Every day, tours are offered at 5:30 p.m., 6 a.m., 6:30 p.m., 7, 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. If these slots sell out, additional tours will be added.
Tickets for Hayes Presidential members are $ 15 for adults 19 and over, $ 8 for ages 6 to 8, and free for children 5 and under. Tickets for non-members are $ 18 for adults 19 and over, $ 10 for kids 6-18, and free for kids 5 and under.
